Glossary

Circulation: how many copies of a magazine are sold

Concentration of ownership: A few companies own the majority of products within the industry

Convergence (technological): Different technological systems (gadgets) that perform similar tasks

Conglomerate (media): A large company that owns many companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the Internet (such as Time Warner and Newscorp)

Convergence (media): Different media products are often linked to each other in production, distribution and marketing. Even the very same products are circulated in different forms of media.

Cross-media ownership: Owning companies across a number of media (eg newspapers, TV and radio) In Britain there are limits on how many media companies a media conglomerate can own.

Demographics: Categorising people by quantifiable things like age, gender, class, race etc.

Distribution: Getting product to market, includes advertising, audience research, publicity and deals with retail outlets

e-zine: small magazines and newsletters distributed by any electronic method (eg email)
Media conglomerate: a huge company that owns large numbers of smaller companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the Internet
Merging/merged: to come together, through a company take-over for example

Mobi-zine: a "snack-sized" version of a magazine available on mobile phones (Maxim’s got a version)

Monopoly: absolute control of all sales and distribution in a market by one firm, due to some barrier to entry of other firms

Niche: a particular and closely defined audience

Proliferation: to grow or multiply by rapidly

Psychographics: market segmentation for marketing purposes, by classifying potential customers by their attitudes and values.

Readership: how many people read a magazine (can only be an estimate) As a very rough rule of thumb divide readership by 3 to get circulation.

Synergy: is the promotion and sale of a product (and all its versions) throughout the various subsidiaries of a media conglomerate or with the cooperation of another company to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
